Kevin Stewart is a partner in the Commercial Advice and Litigation Group.
Industry experience
Prior to its integration with Lavan Legal in 2012 Kevin was the founding Managing Principal of Maxim Litigation Consultants, a prominent Western Australian practice focusing solely on commercial litigation, dispute resolution, compliance and regulatory issues. His primary practice comprises ‘project’ litigation or arbitration, with much of that litigation on behalf of companies in the resources, energy and infrastructure sectors. That work has been wide ranging and has included litigating and arbitrating in Australia and internationally in relation to complex corporate, contractual or technical issues and claims of significant value. Kevin also appears on behalf of parties appearing before Royal Commissions and boards of inquiry and has represented the interests of corporate clients before regulatory bodies such as the ACCC, ASIC, NCC, APRA, Economic Regulation Authority and Productivity Commission.
Professional background
Kevin holds a Bachelor of Jurisprudence (1981) and a Bachelor of Laws (1982) from the University of Western Australia. He was admitted to practice as a barrister, solicitor and proctor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 1982 and was subsequently admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Federal Court and High Court of Australia, a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
Kevin managed the branch office of a large Western Australian practice between 1983 and 1986 before commencing practice in partnership in 1986. In 1989 he formed the practice K N Stewart & Associates which shortly thereafter merged with the resources-based practice Pullinger Sanderson & Workman. That firm became Pullinger Readhead Stewart; Kevin remained with that firm from 1990, occupying the position of partner in charge of the commercial litigation division and managing partner until the formation of Maxim Litigation Consultants in 2004.
Kevin has been the honorary or voluntary legal adviser for a number of community based groups and organisations.
